PECS Software

PECS systems first started off in the mid 80’s as paper systems used within a booklet with an option page with the pictures at the back attached with Velcro to make sure that pictures were kept within all the same place. These systems are still used today as not one way of communication works for all, however by introducing the use of tablets and iPads in class and at home has had a significant affect on the ability of communication of children with ASD.

“Advantages of using the iPad for augmentative and alternative communication includes the ability to have access to continued updates from application developers, more customizable features for children with varying levels of mental and physically disabilities, and a more cost effective delivery system for students.”

(Murray & Olsese, 2011).

By having the option of paper PECs or a tablet with PEC software on it students are being given a voice in which they can express themselves freely.  The change to technology over the past 20 years has benefitted PECS users in the very best possible way, due to the ongoing development of software such as My Choice Board (Good Karma Applications, 2012) and Go Talk Now Free (The Attainment Company, 2012) has given people with ASD the ability to use software similar to PECs without having to carry around a paper copy of the system. This then opens doors to ongoing app updates on language and phrasing, unlike the paper copy that will stay the same until new pictures are physically added.
